Breakout Sessions

Immediately following the opening session, participants chose from the three following breakout sessions. During these sessions local CEOs and education, labor and policy leaders debated local challenges in education, economic development and public policy, three topics that are at the forefront of San Diego's workforce development agenda.

  • The Future of San Diego's Workforce:
    Crisis or Opportunity?

  • Moderator: Larry Edwards, Business Editor, San Diego Magazine

Opening: Marney Cox, Chief Economist, SANDAG
    [PowerPoint Presentation Now Available]

Panelists: Norma Hernandez, Superintendent/President Southwestern Community College District

Mitch Mitchell, Vice President, Public Policy, San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce

Larry Rosenstock, CEO, High Tech High and High Tech Learning

Joseph Psuik, Senior Vice President/COO, San Diego Convention Center

Many things shape San Diego's workforce, including the region's demographics, migration, and job skill requirements. How will San Diego ensure that its workforce remains competitive in this changing economy?

During this session a panel of experts provided information on the state of San Diego's future workforce and examined various strategies for meeting workforce needs.

  • Keeping San Diego Strong:
    The Education Element

  • Moderator: George Chamberlin, Business Editor, KOGO Radio/Money Advisor for NBC 7/39
Opening: The Honorable Tony Young, Councilmember, Council District 4, City of San Diego

Panelists: Dr. Ed Brand, Superintendent, Sweetwater Union High School District

Peter Zschiesche, Trustee, San Diego Community College Board & Executive Board, San Diego & Imperial Counties Labor Council

Steve Escoboza, President and CEO, Healthcare Association of San Diego & Imperial Counties

Dr. Gail Naughton, Dean, School of Business Administration, San Diego State University

Many would argue that the quality and success of our local education system is the most important contributor to the quality of our region's workforce. A person's success or failure in the education system practically determines their success or failure in the workplace.

A diverse panel of business, education and community leaders discussed the state of our current education system, the direction they saw education heading, and strategies for ensuring all of our students are ultimately prepared to succeed.

  • The HR Dilemma:
    Finding Employees Now

  • Panelists: Gabriel Wisdom, KPBS Commentator/American Money Management, LLC
Opening: Joyce Rowland, Senior Vice President of Human Resources, Sempra Energy

Tim Mulligan, Director of Human Resources, Zoological Society of San Diego

Ky Lewis, Executive Vice President and General Council, SHARP Healthcare

Bill McClelland, Director of Human Resources, Qualcomm

Sue Stevenson, Vice President of Global Human Resources, Elan Pharmaceuticals

While long range planning and discussions about the region's future workforce are important, local human resources directors need to be able to find qualified workers now. San Diego's relatively strong economy means that local employers are working harder and harder to find qualified workers with the skills they need and must find creative ways to compensate workers and still remain competitive.

During this session, senior HR leaders built on the morning's opening session and provided perspectives on recruitment, retention, and training issues.

    Keynote Debate

The day ended with a memorable dialogue and debate between former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, and former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich. As two of our nation's most accomplished and well respected political leaders, Mr. Gingrich and Mr. Reich play critical roles in advising national policy related to workforce issues. Each an expert on this topic in his own right, these two dynamic public leaders pulled no punches in articulating the severity of the potential workforce crisis, identifying its unique characteristics and proposing real solutions. This dialogue was moderated by former Congressman from Wisconsin Steve Gunderson, a friend and colleague of both speakers and a lifelong advocate on workforce and economic issues.

    Book Signing

Following the keynote debate, Newt Gingrich and Robert Reich were available for a book signing.
