SCHOOL-TO-CAREER INTERMEDIARY TEAM

Funded by Union Bank of California

The School-to-Career Intermediary system links students with businesses to create rich work-based learning experiences, including job shadowing, internships, company tours and mentoring.  Regional school districts, community-based organizations and other community stakeholders contract with the Intermediary to provide young people with work-readiness training and real work experiences in local businesses that prepare them for post-secondary education and the workforce.  The School-to-Career Intermediary also coordinates annual Job Fairs for young people, ages 16-21 that are seeking summer or holiday employment.

YEAR-LONG YOUTH PROGRAMS

The San Diego Workforce Partnership’s Youth Programs help youth, ages 14 to 21, to achieve their educational goals and get ready for employment via a network of community-based youth service providers. Special emphasis is placed on serving vulnerable youth ages 16 to 21 who have dropped out of school or those at risk of dropping out. San Pasqual Academy is a residential high school for foster youth located in North San Diego County. The program includes residential care, education preparation leading to high school completion, work readiness preparation and community involvement.  In addition, the program provides work readiness training, basic and life skills building, community internships, tutoring, career counseling, elective courses such as business skills, computer applications and multi-media.

The North County Youth Career Network (NCYCN) offers a comprehensive system of youth development, workforce development, and academic innovation across the entire region of North San Diego County. The NCYCN supports both in-school and out-of-school youth ages 16-21, by providing students a customized menu of services that blends individual meetings with case managers, basic skill and career assessments, work readiness classes, youth development and special topic workshops, as well as social and cultural events. The overall goal of the North County Youth Career Network is for the youth to stay in school, continue their education, manage their life challenges, gain career oriented work experience, and start the path to realize their career goals.

The Coalition of Neighborhood Councils (CNC) is a community based organization providing resident empowerment, community development services, education completion, workforce preparation, and placement services to court and gang affiliated out-of-school youth in southeastern San Diego, through The Southeastern Community Jobs Partnership. The Southeastern Community Jobs Partnership brings together CNC, Overcoming Gangs, San Diego Community College District, and Pazzaz to provide a relationship based, multi-agency, integrated approach to service delivery that leads to permanent employment and self sufficiency for out of school youth who have been involved in gang activity and/or the juvenile justice system.

The CNC also serves as the lead agency on the Morse/Southeastern Gang Prevention Initiative, a school-based gang prevention program providing year round activities that include paid work experience, career exploration, and educational supports infused with youth development.

Grossmont Union High School District, Grossmont Adult Schools, and the East County Career Center in partnership with the El Cajon Collaborative provide workforce development services to youth between the ages of 16-21 who meet Workforce Investment Act (WIA) eligibility criteria established by the Department of Labor. Services include but are not limited to the following: Completion of High School Diploma or GED, career assessment, work readiness and life skills training, job shadow, work experience/internship opportunities, leadership and community service, mentoring, tutoring supportive services to assist with successful completion of academics, advanced career training, and/or employment. Services may be long term and include intensive case management support.

South Bay Community Services Transitioning Youth Project provides access to educational services, work readiness training, work preparation and work-based opportunities, and youth development services for South Bay youth ages 16-21 transitioning from justice system camps and facilities.

Services are  provided by a collaboration of agencies, including SBCS, the Sweetwater Union High School District and Comprehensive Training Systems.  The program provides work preparation and provides or arranges for work-based opportunities in the form of stipend internships, and youth development services that include a peer-mentoring component. The youth development component includes access to Independent Living Skills classes as needed and incentives for participation; opportunities to attend financial literacy classes, anger management groups to learn conflict management; and access to mental health services if needed.  The services are provided from a wraparound platform designed to help youth transition into self-sufficiency.

ONE-STOP CAREER CENTER YOUTH SERVICES

The One-Stop Career Centers provide services to 14-21 year olds. These services include intensive services to out-of-school older youth between the ages of 18 – 21; those that are dropped out or graduated from secondary school but are unemployed and need additional educational assistance. In addition, each one-stop provides some level of services to both in and out-of-school youth such as job search assistance, career assessment, workshops and information and referral.  In addition, the Career Centers collaborate with other educational and youth providers in their region in the County.
