The Introductory Life Sciences Experience (ILSE) is a two-week summer exploratory program developed to gain more student interest in the life sciences industry.  Through hands-on laboratory training and industry experiences, students will have the opportunity to visit various research institutes and companies throughout San Diego.  Students will acquire new work readiness skills while learning about the many career pathways within the life sciences industry.  All participants will receive a $500 stipend upon completion of this program as welll as a certificate of completion.

 

 


2009 ILSE Participants & Instructors

The ILSE piloted its first group this past summer. Eighteen students from all over San Diego County met everyday at the Southern California Biotechnology Center at Miramar College in San Diego.


 

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be WIA eligible/enrolled San Diego County residents and have completed their most recent semester of high school at a public, private, or continuing education school within San Diego County
  • Interest in Science
  • Minimum of 2.0 GPA
  • Have successfully completed at least one science course
  • At least 16 years of age during application period
  • Transportation required to and from Miramar College
  • Must be able to commit to 30 hrs/wk for the duration of the program.
One-Week Laboratory Training
Students attend a one-week laboratory training at Miramar College. During the training, work readiness and soft skills training is incorporated into the program. The work readiness is taught by San Diego Workforce Partnership staff focusing on applications, resumes, cover letters, and "thank-you" cards. Industry professionals volunteer their time to come and speak to our participants on the importance of teamwork and communication.
 

 

  One-week Industry Experiences
Students have the opportunity to visit several ogranizations around San Diego including Biogen Idec, San Diego Zoo's Institute for Conservation Research, Ocean Discovery Institute, The Scripps Research Institute, and Ruben H. Fleet Science Center. Participants learn more about careers, interact with scientists, participate in hands-on activities as well as the opportunity to speak to Life Sciences Summer Institute high school interns.
