2009 Hire-A-Youth Summer Employment Program
As part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the Department of Labor has allocated funds for summer work-readiness training and paid work experience for youth ages 14 to 24. The Hire-A-Youth Program will take place between May 1st and September 30th and will match youth and young adults with employment opportunities at local city, county, non-profit and businesses in areas such as service, technology, environmental preservation, health care, biotech, recreation and more. The Hire-A-Youth Program will provide between 120 and 240 hours of paid work experience for eligible youth. To be eligible for enrollment into the Hire-A-Youth program, applicants must be able to verify the following:

We are currently seeking worksites in the northern region of San Diego county that are able to accommodate youth between the ages of 14-24. There is a larger need for worksites for youth between the age of 14-18. Metro Region:

ACCESS – will provide services to in-school and out-of-school youth from zip codes 92101, 92110, 92111, 92113, and 92123. For more information, please contact Scott Blitgen at (858) 560-0871.

San Diego Futures Foundation – The City Heights Technology Corps will help make technology more convenient and user-friendly by providing assistance and community projects in City Heights. The City Heights Technology Corps will be made up of four teams: Community Technology Center Assistance, Social Network Nonprofit Marketing, Fab Lab Community Projects and Recycling and Salvage. Youth will also learn about community building and basic money management. Participants must be at least 16 years old and have information technology experience. Enrollment is limited to 89 youth. Students from the Hoover High School Academy of Information Technology and the City Heights Heads on Fire-Fab Lab have enrollment priority. For more information, please go to: www.sdfutures.org

San Diego Unified School District – This program will provide internships for 14 to 21 year old students at six high schools: Morse, Madison, San Diego, Hoover, Crawford, and Lincoln. Students must be enrolled in one of these schools or be able to attend work readiness training at one of these schools. The program will align with each school’s career focus. Metro United Methodist Urban Ministry - Metro United Methodist Urban Ministry’s Urban Green Summer Youth Employment Program will provide summer employment assistance to 318 youth living in the metro area of San Diego that are 14-24 years old and meet eligibility requirements. All placements will be based on interest and skill levels in a variety of settings, and placements to 19-24 year olds primarily placed in ‘green’ industry jobs. All participants will obtain job readiness training prior to placement, and support during the summer employment program.

Coalition of Neighborhood Councils – This program will provide placements in the following fields: Community Service; Construction Trades and Green Jobs; and Social and Entrepreneurial Ventures. Youth ages 18 to 24 residing in southeastern San Diego who are out of school and unemployed or underemployed are particularly encouraged to apply. San Diego County Office of Education – Juvenile Court and Community Schools – this program will specifically work with youth in the San Diego South Region who are in the Foster Care system, homeless, on probation, parenting, or at other high risk. Comprehensive Training Systems – Summer Work Experiences for youth in South County will be available in South County offices, South county Cities, non-profits and private sector industries that include, healthcare, manufacturing, property maintenance and management, communication, import/export and hospitality. Urban Corps – Urban Corps of San Diego County’s 2009 Green Team is a summer job-training program designed to put youth to work. Anyone ages 14-24 living in East County is eligible to apply. All jobs focus on environmental preservation. Youth will be working outdoors clearing brush, building trails, planting trees, recycling and more! You can earn $8.25 per hours up to 159 hours over 5 weeks. Escondido Education Compact - Is currently looking for 260 youth from North Inland San Diego County to place in summer employment opportunities. COMPACT's Summer YouthForce Program is recruiting youth (ages 14-24) that live in Escondido, San Marcos, Vista and Fallbrook. We have a many different and exciting summer employment placement options. Also, our Summer YouthForce Program is recruiting youth (16 - 24) across the North County Region that is interested in exploring careers in Healthcare. YMCA – Focusing services for 18-24 year olds who will have the opportunity to work with the YMCA. Job choices include Camping Services and Office Administration in Julian, Encinitas, Escondido, Rancho Peñasquitos and Oceanside. Youth can also be exposed to Social Services jobs in Escondido and our OZ Shelter in Oceanside. Non-YMCA worksites will be available in other industries. SER – Will provide Hire-a-Youth services in the coastal area of North County including the cities of: Oceanside, Camp Pendleton, Carlsbad, Encinitas, and Del Mar. We will place youth and young adults in jobs related to health care, animal care, law enforcement, recreation, construction, and many more interesting summer work experiences.
