WRITING A THANK YOU NOTE

After your job interview, you should:

1. Write thank you notes.
2. Make follow-up calls.
3. Write follow-up letters.

1. Thank You Notes

  • Always write a thank you note.
  • The type of thank you note may vary with each situation. A hand-written thank you note is more personal than a typed note, but if most of your communication has been through the Internet, an emailed thank you note may be appropriate. In either case, avoid faxing your thank you note because it is not private.
  • Thank you notes should be written or typed on quality paper, monogrammed or blank note cards or stationery. It is inappropriate to use casual, or informal note cards or stationery for thank you notes in a business setting.
  • Deliver the note personally preferably the same day as the interview. Drop it by the receptionist's desk and ask that it be delivered today. This will make you stand out from the competition.
  • Restate one or two specific skills that the interviewer mentioned were necessary skills for the job and give an example of your experience in this area.

A thank you note should:

  • Thank the interviewer(s) for their time.
  • Remind them of something you agreed upon.
  • Share any background that you may have forgotten during the interview.
  • Let the interviewer(s) know how excited you are about the job.

2. Follow-Up Calls

  • Call the day the interviewer expects to make a decision.
  • When you call emphasize your interest in the job.
  • Ask if you can provide additional information,- or answer questions to help them make a decision.

3. Follow-Up Notes

  • Two or three days after your follow-up phone call, send a typed note letting the interviewer know you are anxious to hear his or her decision.
  • Remind the interviewer of a particular strength you bring to the organization.

HAND WRITTEN THANK YOU NOTE

Dear Mr. Taylor,

Thank you for the opportunity to interview for the position of Senior Engineer. I appreciate the time you were able to spend with me.

I am very impressed with ABC Company and the accomplishments of your department over the last few years. The project we spoke about very closely parallels one I recently completed; I believe I would come up to speed on your procedures very quickly.

I look forward to hearing from you regarding an opportunity to work with your organization.
