JOB APPLICATIONS
Job Applications are a vital part of your job search. You may be asked to fill one out when you show up for an interview. Don’t be blindsided. Be prepared. Here are some hints to keep in mind:
-
Maintain a master application that you carry around with you on your job search and when going for an interview.
-
Always read the entire application before beginning to fill it out.
-
Follow the instructions – that’s why it is important to read it first.
-
Use only black or blue ink. In fact, always bring along a good pen just in case. Use a ballpoint pen and not a felt tip or rollerball pen. These can run or smudge.
-
Neatness does count. If the employer cannot read it, your application won’t be considered.
-
So does spelling. Another reason to have some kind of master application to refer to.
-
Applications are an opportunity to exhibit your attentiveness to detail.
-
Fill out everything. If something is not applicable, then fill in “not applicable.”
-
Most applications ask for a signature. This implies, even more so than a resume, that what you state on it is true.
-
Be concise, be complete, and be correct.
