WHICH FORMAT SHOULD I USE ?
Most resumes use either a chronological format or a functional format.
Chronological Format
-
Present your work experience by starting with your most recent place of employment first, then list each job you've held prior to that in reverse order.
-
List the jobs you have held.
-
Describe the activities and accomplishments of each job in a single paragraph or in bullet points.
Functional Format
-
Present your work experience by listing the skills you have used in all your past jobs.
-
Document each of those skills by describing a number of activities and accomplishments drawn from ALL your jobs and life experiences.
Answer the following questions to help you determine which format to use
| Is the job you are applying for in a different field than you have previously worked? This does not mean a different industry, but a different job. |
YES |
NO |
| Have you held more than four jobs in the past five years? |
YES |
NO |
| Have you been unemployed for longer than one year? |

NO |
If you answered "Yes" to one or more of the questions, use the functional format.
If you answered "NO" to all of the questions, use the chronological format.
